The weddings that I feel most at home photographing don’t happen in a traditional venue or follow a tight timeline.

I’m drawn to days that take place in cozy backyards, your grandparent’s farm, a cottage along the shoreline, or intimate, character-filled spaces.

They’re unhurried but intentional – built around what matters, not what’s expected.

My approach & philosophy

I’m not there to direct the day or shape it into something it’s not.

I’ll guide you when it’s helpful, but most of the time I’m observing—paying attention to what’s already happening and documenting it as it unfolds.

The goal isn’t to create moments, but to recognize them.

HOW DO THESE NON TRADITIONAL WEDDING DAYS WORK?

The choices are endless when you’re planning a non-traditional wedding, but sometimes it can be overwhelming trying to figure out how all the pieces come together. I’ve compiled a few quick notes below that should help with your initial planning – but I love to help my couples design the best day ever, so I’m always available to brainstorm, bounce ideas off of, or share some tried-and-true solutions to wedding day planning.

BEST OWEN SOUND WEDDING LOCATIONS

Although there are so many more hidden gems in this area, here are a few of my favourite places to photograph intimate weddings in and around the city.

  • YOUR OWN BACKYARD (OR YOUR FAMILY’S PROPERTY)
    This is always such a great option for couples who want to stay in a space that’s comfortable and familiar. Having a backyard wedding eliminates the need to pack, travel, or spend any time at all driving around on your wedding day! You can hire private officiants, chefs/catering, and even decor companies to come to your space so that you don’t have to lift a finger.
  • GREY SAUBLE CONSERVATION AUTHORITY
    With a number of properties in the area, the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority boasts waterfalls, beaches, forests, trails and riverside spaces for intimate ceremonies, as well as pavilion rentals at numerous locations. These properties are accessible from dawn to dusk, and it’s important to check their website for trail and property updates or closures.
  • INTIMATE RESTAURANTS & SMALL BUSINESSES
    Owen Sound offers a variety of unique and interesting small businesses that offer a more intimate, character-filled setting – ideal if you want something relaxed without booking a traditional venue. For intimate weddings or post-ceremony dinners, spaces like Nagaan, Shanny’s kitchen, and the Milk Maid offer fantastic cuisine and local charm.
  • PRIVATE COTTAGES AND AIRBNB’S
    For a more contained and personal setting, renting a cottage or Airbnb can give you full control over the space. This works especially well if you’re including a small group or want to combine your ceremony, dinner, and time together in one location.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN YOU DON’T BOOK A TRADITIONAL VENUE


Although booking with a traditional venue can provide a lot of peace of mind, it also creates restrictions in how your wedding day flows. Here are a few things to keep in mind when planning your day:

  • DON’T FORGET A RAIN PLAN
    I will admit that I LOVE the thought of a ceremony in the rain, but I recognize this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Don’t forget to plan for inclement weather throughout your day, even though everyone hopes not to need it!
  • THINK AHEAD FOR PARKING
    No matter where you choose to hold your wedding day, parking is definitely a consideration. If parking space is limited, encourage guests to carpool or hire a private transport company to move people back and forth.
  • NON-TRADITIONAL DOESN’T MEAN NO PLANNING
    One of the biggest pitfalls I see with smaller, non-traditional-venue weddings is that couples forget that the day still needs a plan, even if you prefer to stay as low-key as possible. Guests like to know what to expect and when, and it will help everyone relax and enjoy the day if you aren’t dealing with last-minute decisions and adjustments day-of.
  • ANTICIPATE QUESTIONS
    Not everyone understands the idea of having a non-traditional wedding, but don’t let their skepticism change your mind or impact your choices. If you need someone in your corner to hype up your plans – I’ll be there!

UNIQUE WEDDING DAY EXPERIENCES & ACTIVITIES

Choosing a day that’s built around experiences over tradition means that ultimately, your day can look however you’d like it to. Here are a few totally unique ways to celebrate your wedding:

  • PRIVATE SCENIC FLIGHT
    Booking a small private flight over the shoreline & islands, local waterfalls, or escarpment gives you a completely different perspective of the area and is especially gorgeous in the fall.
  • SAUNA, COLDPLUGE, OR SPA-LIKE EXPERIENCE
    There are a few Nordic-style sauna setups in the area that offer private bookings. It can be a really grounding way to start or end the day, especially if you’re leaning into a more relaxed, weekend-style wedding.
  • CHARTERED SAIL ALONG GEORGIAN BAY
    Spending part of the day out on the water—whether it’s a quiet sail or a simple boat ride—adds a slower, more immersive experience without needing a structured timeline.
  • FLOWER FARM OR WILDFLOWER FIELD
    Depending on the season, visiting a local flower farm or natural field can be a quiet way to spend part of the day—simple, slow, and visually beautiful without needing much structure. Bonus – pick your own bouquet!

  • LOGISTICS: There are always a few practical pieces—where people gather, how things transition, and what needs to be in place—but it doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. I help you think through what matters so nothing gets missed.
  • A FLEXIBLE APPROACH: Things don’t always go exactly as planned—and that’s usually part of what makes these days feel the way they do. I approach it with flexibility so it can shift naturally, without feeling rushed or overly structured.
